This is a studio designed for the Japanese collector Mariko Kusumoto. She is very good at making different crafts with fabric, such as small jewellery items. And she is often inspired by nature, especially by the various creatures of the sea, such as coral. I have therefore designed large abstract coral-like shelves in the studio, which take on an organic form and extend to all corners of the studio, acting as display cases and communal lounge spaces, while also dividing the space into different sections.
The studio has different functions, in addition to the most basic living such as sleeping, cooking, working, etc., it also has space for exhibitions and hospitality. As I chose the original site with the empty stairwell, the room is well lit and has an existing safety staircase. The coral mounted shelves drop down from the ceiling and the holes in them filter the sunlight, reflecting spots of light on the walls and floor of the room.

The space feels very free and open and light, and is made up of squares of the same volume, like blocks, so that it is very versatile and people can stand or sit in it as they please. This form allows for a variety of different functional spaces.
However, a simple square is not as comfortable as a curve, so I wanted to draw on this modular form in my design, but combine it with a curve to make the space more comfortable.
