Tulou

The model I made was inspired by a traditional Chinese building. It is a tulou that I saw during my trip to Fujian a few years ago.

These square or round buildings alaways with a hollow center and only stairs and rooms around it. The outer skin is made of thick clay mixed with egg liquid and other materials, which can serve as a good defense against external enemies.

For me, I like the construction of the inside layer by layer, and Inside, the stairs leads in all directions, connecting different spaces, each with a different view. But unfortunately, one can’t observe the details of the interior just from the outside of the building.

So I tried to use transparent material instead of clay for showing the interior. At the same time, I associated it with the stairs that move in the castle in the movie Harry Potter, and the different directions of the stairs lead people to different places, which I thought was interesting. And it has some similarity with the tolou, so I used the stairs as the main element of expression.

In the choice of materials, I hope to have a relatively large difference with the traditional, so the choice of white and hazy material, so that the model looks lighter. But this is not easy, the outer layer of very thin translucent fabric is easy to stick to the table, plus the overall structure is cardboard so the whole model seems too soft, so I spent a lot of time to stabilize the model. And the next time I make a model I will try to use a strong material in the inside to do the skeleton.
